Fort Dobbs is a NC Historic Site open year round (704-873-5866). Hugh Waddell built the fort in 1756 in honor of royal governor Arthur Dobbs to stave off Indian Raids on the colonists. It marked the western most frontier at that time. During extreme danger colonists camped behind the log walls of the fort. In 1760, a raiding party of Cherokee Indians made the only direct attack ever attempted against the fort. They host Militia Encampments and Reenactments throughout the year. Today the property includes archaeological sites, displays of artifacts, trails and facilities for recreation.
